South Windsor Fire Department Puts Out Garbage Truck Fire

Call came in around 1:50 p.m., according to Chief Kevin Cooney.

Here’s a trashy story from the South Windsor Volunteer Fire Department.

Two fire engines and a duty officer successfully put out a small fire that started in the rear compartment of a garbage truck at the intersection of Farmstead Drive and Norma Road on Wednesday afternoon, according to Fire Chief Kevin Cooney.

The garbage truck was making its rounds around 1:50 p.m. when it picked up a barrel whose contents apparently were smoldering, though the fire remains under investigation by the fire marshall, Cooney said.

No injuries were reported and the garbage truck was not damaged, according to Cooney.

The operator of the garbage truck dumped the contents from the back onto the street and continued on its route after a mechanic from the company examined the vehicle, Cooney said.

The trash was spread out onto the street to ensure it was no longer aflame. With the assistance of the refuse company and the town’s department of public works, the trash was hauled away, Cooney said.
