South Windsor Children Elect Their Favorite Book Characters

Sixty-seven kids exercised their 'right' to vote on Election Day.

About $2.5 billion was spent on the 2012 presidential race, according to OpenSecrets.org.

About $2.5 billion less was spent in deciding the four mock races that were run in the children's section of the South Windsor Public Library on Tuesday.

Some 67 children cast their ballots in four separate races: "Best Book Boy," "Best Book Girl," "Best Book Animal," and "Best Book Duo."

According to children's librarian Lisa Moss, the winners were the following:

  • Arthur (books by Marc Brown) won by a landslide for Best Book Boy.
  • Amelia Bedelia (books by Peggy Parish) won in decisive fashion for Best Book Girl.
  • Curious George (books by H.A. Rey) edged out Mouse (books by Laura Numeroff) by a slim margin for Best Book Animal.
  • In the most hotly contested race, Max and Ruby (books by Rosemary Wells) "finally conceded to Elephant and Piggie (books by Mo Willems) after a recount."

"Elephant, also known as Gerald, made a most eloquent acceptance speech, I’m sure," Moss quipped in an e-mail. "I’m also sure that no one was there to hear it except Piggie."
