The lines on Saturdays now snake out the door of South Windsor’s Vivie and David Glass' Delicious Desserts, which is closing its location on 400 Chapel Road in just under two weeks.
In a telephone interview Saturday, Glass said that he and Vivie were closing the business because their youngest son Adam, a student at Hunter College, died suddenly just three months ago.
“It was something that nobody knew about and nobody would have known about,” David Glass said. “Our youngest son passed away and we lost our passion for baking.”
Adam, who passed away due to a coronary condition, was just 21 years old.
The tragedy marks the end of a remarkable 30-year run for David and Vivie, both of whom had their gourmet cakes reach the dessert trays of such luminaries as President Bill Clinton and David Letterman.
Prior to moving to his location in South Windsor nearly two years ago, Glass owned and operated Desserts by David Glass out of Hartford and Bloomfield until 2009.
The recession and the loss of a major account led Glass to close his Bloomfield location and start back up his scaled-back operation in December 2010. Vivie and David Glass' Delicious Desserts sold only to walk-in customers in Fridays and Saturdays.
Since Adam’s passing, the business has been open only on Saturdays.
“We have had lines halfway through the parking lot since four weeks ago when we notified everybody,” David Glass said. “People are stocking up on our stuff. People are very sympathetic and they know about the loss, but they are upset they can’t buy our cakes anymore because we’ve been in the area 30 years and sold cakes all over the country prior to that.
Glass said that he and Vivie plan on moving up to Burlington, Vt. to be near his oldest son Josh and granddaughter. The couple will also travel to see their middle son Jeremy in New York. In addition, after deciding against selling their recipes to a big company, he and Vivie plan on publishing an e-book with their recipes.
Looking back at the last 30 years, David Glass said that there was just one instance he can recall in the tens of thousands of cakes he has baked that he sent out a cake that fell below his high standards. That was 15 years ago.
“We’re perfectionists,” David Glass said. “We’re passionate about food; our goal has always been that every single cake should be perfect, but extraordinary tasting and all-natural.”
The walk-in set up in the South Windsor location coupled with the tastings the couple offered gave them an opportunity to interact with their customers.
“We love all of our customers and it was something we always wanted to do and should have done from the beginning,” Glass said.
Vivie and David Glass' Delicious Desserts is located at 400 Chapel Road, Bissell Commons, Unit 2D, and is open just two more days: Saturday, Oct. 6 and Saturday, Oct. 13, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
