Legendary cake maker David Glass and his wife Vivie are closing their doors in South Windsor for good Saturday.
The couple has run Vivie and David Glass’ Delicious Desserts at its 400 Chapel Road (Bissell Commons) location since December 2010.
They decided in August to close the store after the death of their youngest son Adam.
Since then, David and Vivie have been holding tastings and selling their cakes - the ones that were not pre-ordered - on Saturdays, leading up to the final day on Oct. 13.
The closing will mark the end of a remarkable 30-year run for David Glass, who originally opened up a high-end cake business - Desserts by David Glass - in Hartford that was subsequently moved to Bloomfield.
He closed that business in 2009, abd he and his wife Vivie subsequently sold cakes and held tastings out of the South Windsor store beginning in late 2010.
David Glass said in a statement that there will be 40 to 50 cakes available for sale Saturday - including a pumpkin cheesecake with whipped cream, tres leches (Zoe’s cake), triple chocolate mousse, luscious Italian almond cake, chocolate truffle cake - for those that have not pre-ordered a cake to pick up.
The statement also provides the following (Italics added):
“To everyone who has ordered and received a confirmation, please arrive at 9 a.m. on Saturday Oct. 13.
"If you didn't order, feel free to line up for our remaining cakes.
"In addition, we will be giving away our cake pans (1 of each per person, first come, first served) on Oct. 13 so that you will be able to make the cakes featured in our upcoming "VIVIE AND DAVID GLASS' DELICIOUS DESSERTS RECIPE BOOK" (See details in an upcoming email.)
"(But don't panic if you don't get a pan. We'll tell you where to buy them, and they will be much prettier that ours.)
"Vivie and I will send you a personal thank you e-mail after we close, so please read next week's email.
"If you didn't order, you can call us on Saturday to make sure that we still have cakes: 860-462-7520."
