Dog Days... How About Cat Days?

Looking for childhood relief from the Summer heat.

It's been a while since I've written a blog. No real reason, as I have a lot to say about a lot of things, but maybe its just the humid, demotivating weather.

When you go from A/C inside your office or your car, out to the humid air, it just drains every ounce of passion or thought-provocation that I have. Can't help it.  It seems that as I've gotten older, I don't deal with extreme weather like I used to as a youngster.

Remember when you were off from school during the summer months, and even if it was stifling outside, you just put on your swimsuit and ran around under a sprinkler in your backyard.  I'd spend the entire summer in that suit (that sounds icky doesn't it?), and just enjoy my neighborhood, wait for the ice cream man to come through and find that cool refreshment with ease.  Run around at night chasing fireflies and capturing them in jars to light the dark of my bedroom.

I don't think kids take summer heat the same way anymore.  They're looking for something more exciting, I'm sure, something gadget-worthy, a pool with an app for that!

I'd be happy going back to my childhood and run around my backyard through the sprinkler.  But, at 57, I don't think the neighbors would be all too happy about that scene.

Who cares?  In these Dog or Cat days of summer, I'll just wait here for the ice cream person and hope I can afford a sky blue popsicle.

Hey Joyce, good to see your blog here! My favorite was the sky blue pink popsicle, too! We used to walk (yes, walk - I never asked a grown up for a ride to the corner or across town for that matter) - to Westown Pharmacy to get those delicious treats! I think I paid a whole 20 cents!

Hey Mary Jane! Thanks for reading, and I'm excited to see you soon!! Gotta love that Westtown still exists . . . might be different owners, but the corner drug store is still there. Can't say that about a lot of them these days!! Take care! Joyce

you're so right Malinda! It's hard to turn back time, but when we start remembering, we do that on our own with our families and friends, and then maybe it grows from there. When we have electricity outages, it forces us to think differently. Just think of what India just went through. If we don't start thinking smartly, we'll be in the same predicament. Be well, Joyce

Hi Joyce, it’s funny how you brought up that you are able to tolerate the weather much lesser as you grow older. I feel exactly the same way. Old age just seems to take the fun out of most of everything! Hot days are definitely unbearable on top of a hot flash! Arthritic joints are more painful in cold weather. I guess you can still do most of the things you did when you were younger, but to a much more restrained degree! We definitely cannot run around the pool, but just “amble” around would be good enough, lest you slip and dislocate a hip!

Michiel, I do not feel better . . . . dislocate my hip - yikes! That takes on a whole other conversation about the fact that I don't have health care! No running for me, or jumping, or hopping, or . . . . life is such fun. Joyce
