Former Manchester Mayor Dies at 91

Theunis "Terry" Werkhoven passed away Friday.

Theunis "Terry" Werkhoven, 91, who served as Manchester’s mayor in the early 1990s died Friday, Jan. 24, according to his obituary.

Werkhoven, who was born in the Netherlands and graduated from Rockville High School in 1941, spent much of his adult life participating in Manchester town government.

He held a position on the Building Committee for 20 years and in 1989, was elected mayor. Following his time as an elected official, Werkhoven continued to attend government meetings and advocate for the town.

Werkhoven was also active in several community organizations, including Masons and Shriners, Army and Navy Club, American Legion, the South United Methodist Church and the Manchester Child Guidance Clinic.

He leaves his children Carl Werkhoven and his wife, Donna of South Windsor, Stephen Werkhoven and his wife, Sandra of Manchester, his five grandchildren and his two great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be held Tuesday, Jan. 28, from 4- 8 p.m. with a Masonic Service at 7:30 p.m., at Watkins Funeral Home 142 East Center St., Manchester. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Jan. 29 at 11 a.m. at South United Methodist Church, 1226 Main St., Manchester. Entombment will follow with military honors at Holy Cross Cemetery, Glastonbury.
