The South Windsor Volunteer Fire Department Explorers Post 838 hosted is second-annual car wash fundraiser on Saturday morning.

Last year, the Explorers raised about $1,100 for a scholarship fund created in the memorry of Doug Warren, a former South Windsor volunteer firefighter who passed away three years ago.

Warren was an advistor to the South Windsor Explorers, which is the oldest active post of its kind in the state, according to Capt. Tom Bengtson of the volunteer fire department.

"We wanted to do something in [Warren's] honor to keep his memory alive," Bengtson said.

Post 838 currently has about 25 members and is always looking for new members, Bengtson said, noting that kids can join from 14 until 18 years old, when they can become full-fledged fire fighters.

"It's our main recruiting mechanism," Bengsten said.
