Schools Project Supporters to Organize Wednesday

Initial meeting to be held to help South Windsor residents get involved.

Supporters of the South Windsor Elementary Schools Facilities Plan are holding an organizational meeting Dec. 11 to get started on efforts to get the project passed.

The meeting is open to anyone interested in supporting the elementary school proposal and is will be held in the Timothy Edwards cafeteria at 7 p.m.

The meeting is being hosted by the project’s communication committee, but organizers said they are looking to get residents of all ages involved.

“We’d really like to turn it over to the community,” said Rick Stahr, a Board of Education member. “This plan isn’t just about parents with kids in school. It’s about everybody in the community. Everybody benefits from the quality of the school system… you just have to be a South Windsor taxpayer.”

The goal is to get the facts about the project out to all the residents of South Windsor. Surveys done following the two failed prior school project referendums showed that many people weren’t clear about the facts of the question, Stahr said.

“It’s important. After having tried twice over the past 10 years, the timing is perfect. It will solve two elementeary school problems at once and barely affect the town’s finances,” he said.

The schools project is already a hot topic around town and organizers want to make sure the facts are there, too.

“There is a lot of interest, a lot of buzz in the community but they aren’t sure how to get involved. The easy answer is come Dec. 11… We only have until March,” Stahr said.

Town Councilor Jan Snyder will address the group.

In case of snow, the event will be postponed until Dec. 12.

Those planning on attending the meeting are invited to RSVP here, on the group’s Facebook page.
