South Windsor Varsity Hockey Players Join Young Skaters on the Ice

The South Windsor High School Varsity Hockey players are not an unusual sight for the youngest hockey players who skate with the South Windsor Youth Hockey Association.  The high school varsity team volunteers with the South Windsor Youth Hockey Association at many levels.  They are often seen on the ice with the Learn to Skate Program, In-House Programs, and even act as student coaches with the youngest travel hockey players during practices.

On Thanksgiving weekend, these young skaters got to see their favorite high school players in a whole new light – as an opponent on the ice.  On this typical Sunday morning, the there was a group of Mite and Squirt players,  which consists primarily of skaters aged 6 – 10 years old who were on the ice waiting for their scrimmage game to begin and going through their pre-game warm-up.  The music began to play and 10 of the returning high school players came out of their locker room and began their warm up at the other end of the ice.  At first, it was if the skaters on the ice didn’t notice as they continued their own warm-up routine.  Then, it seemed like all at once, they all stopped skating – and pointing!  “That’s who we’re playing”,  more than one skater was heard to utter in disbelief!

The event was fun for both the skaters and parents to watch.  The high school players were able to interact with the young skaters they worked with every week, and truly remember what a thrill it is for them to continue to play the game they love.  For our 6 – 10 year old hockey players, it was a chance to play side by side with players doing what they can only dream about at this point – putting on a jersey and playing for their High School team.  The young players came away the victors after defeating the High School players in a shoot-out.

The South Windsor High School Boys Varsity Hockey team kicks off their season on Wednesday, December 18, 2013 at the South Windsor Arena against Simsbury at 5:30 pm.  Please come out and support your South Windsor Bobcats!
