Connecticut Mattress Donation Keeps Families Together

Local business gives 20 new mattresses to Gifts of Love.

To a family in crisis, a bed can mean a world of difference.  Beyond providing a good night’s sleep, a bed for each child helps ensure that families stay together. Donating 20 new Serta twin size mattress sets to makes Tom Wholley, owner of , a local hero in the eyes of Gifts of Love and the families it serves.

“Our beneficiary families face a financial crisis in their lives due to a variety of circumstances,” said Diana Goode, executive director of Gifts of Love. “Our clients are hardworking individuals who simply can’t make ends meet.  Some of our families have been displaced from their homes due fire, domestic violence, or may be leaving a shelter for permanent housing and are starting over from scratch. The Department of Children and Families has requirements that parents must provide a bed for each child. Mattresses are costly and Gifts of Love is always in need of them, particularly twin size. We are truly grateful for this significant donation that allows the family unit to remain intact, and the peace of mind that it brings these families is tremendous. Thanks to the generosity of Tom Wholley, we are also helping our clients with basic needs – groceries, a warm coat, and in this case, beds to sleep in - so that their limited resources can be used on other necessities.”

The 20 bed sets are valued at $6,000. This latest donation is in addition to 15 sets Connecticut Mattress provided to Gifts of Love earlier this year. Gifts of Love offers basic needs such as food, clothing, furniture, household items, and energy assistance to families in need within the Greater Hartford area.  In most cases recipients need to be working to qualify for the program.  When times are toughest, the working poor who don't qualify for many government programs are often hit the hardest.
