Week Ahead in South Windsor: Horse Farm Public Hearing, A Short Week and Thanksgiving

Bobcats take on Rockville on Thanksgiving Day.

It's Thanksgiving week, which means few meetings, a shortened school week and town offices closing. Hopefully, it also means some sweet moments crowded in the kitchen and around the table, as families gather together to celebrate the blessings in our lives.

On Thanksgiving day, South Windsor High School takes on Rockville High in the annual rivalry game at 10 a.m. There is no rooting in the press box but GO BOBCATS!!!

The Board of Education will meet Tuesday and elect officers.

The only town meeting this week is the Planning and Zoning Commission meeting Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. at Town Hall. It promises to be interesting. An official application has been submitted by South Windsor Little League and the Town of South Windsor to construct a new, two-story concession facility and press box at 138 Ayers Road. The commission will also elect officers.

A public hearing for the horse farm applicant, Free Spirit Farm LLC will be continued from Oct. 22. That public hearing drew numerous neighbors to share their concerns about the plans.

The applicant is requesting "special exception and site plan approval for the use of existing barn and farm for boarding, breeding, training and instruction involving horses, under the Commercial Animal Agriculture regulation, on property located at 112 Pheasant Way and 1080 Avery St."

According to the Oct. 22 minutes, the applicant wants "to have a commercial facility to board and train horses and give lessons. Horses will be boarded primarily in barns and run in sheds." The applicant said he would likely have 20 horses with the capacity for 20 more.

Town staff gave no objections to the application, but neighbors said they were concerned about excessive growth of the commercial operation and the smell.
