A Soup Swap, Concerts, an Art Show, and More Around South Windsor This Weekend

Check out what is going on in the region this weekend.

Community Soup Swap
Friday, 4 p.m. - In celebration of the Eighth Annual National Soup Swap Day, the Ellington Farmers' Market will host a soup swap at the Winter Market.  All you have to do is cook up a pot of your favorite soup and bring a quart - either fresh or frozen - to the market. Please put the name of your soup and a list of ingredients on the container. Quart deli containers or mason jars work well. Check out the other soups and swap it for one that strikes your fancy or you think will warm the depths of your winter soul. Your participation helps to create community by bringing people together through food, and could be the start of swappers continuing to gather beyond Soup Swap Day.

Yale Gospel Choir
Friday, 7:30 p.m. - The Loomis Chaffee School will feature the Yale Gospel Choir as part of the school's celebration for Martin Luther King Week. The public is invited to view the choir and there is no charge.

Saturday, 10 a.m. - The ecumenical knitting and crochet group makes prayer shawls, afghans for Hole in the Wall Gang camp, and hats/scarves/mittens for the Christmas tree at the library each year. There is some yarn available for projects.

Manchester Silk City Chorus Annual Show
Saturday, 1:30 p.m. - The title of this year’s show is “Save Our Ship,” a parody on the role and lives of pirates from mid- to late 19th century. The 40 performing members of the Silk City Chorus will appear in memorable pirate costumes, with traditional “accessories,” acting like pirates while performing entertaining parodies of well known pirate songs. Among the songs the chorus will perform are “Drunken Sailor,” “How Deep Is the Ocean,” “Son of the Sea,” “Yo Ho! A Pirate’s Life for Me,” and the ultimate spoof on life on a pirate ship: “What! No Women?” In addition to the host chorus performance, the 51st annual show will feature two world class a cappella groups: quartets which earned Bronze Medals in the 2013 International Championship. The quartet “A Mighty Wind” are Third Place Medalists visiting from Atlanta. The quartet “Forefront” are 5th Place Medalists who join from Ohio. Also appearing in the show will be the Conn-Men, a popular a cappella group from the University of Connecticut, who have performed as the opening act for nationally known performers such as Pentatonix and Rockapella. All seating for both shows is reserved for your convenience and comfort. Advance seating prices are Primary (front 4 rows): $28, Secondary: $23, Classic: $20, and Standard: $17. Doors open one hour before show opening. Parking is free. The facility is handicap accessible.
