Friends Remember East Windsor Teen in Candlelight Vigil
The group of students, parents and school officials gathered at East Windsor Park Wednesday evening to honor and remember Nicole Theresa Weed.
About 80 people gathered for a candlelight vigil in honor of Nicole Weed, who was accident on July 23.
The vigil, held under the pavillion at East Windsor Park, was attended by students, parents, friends and school officials. A short ceremony at sunset featured the lighting of candles, a moment of silence, poems being read and balloons being released, all in memory of the 15-year-old sophomore.
Gala Harriman, a recent East Windsor High School graduate, organized the vigil because she was a close friend of Weed’s and was unable to attend her funeral. Harriman said she and Weed had a Senior-Freshman friendship that was like being sisters.
Harriman said she convinced Weed to try out for the cheerleading squad, where she became one of two freshmen on the team. Everyone on the team grew to love Weed, she said.
“I love Nicole with all my heart,” Harriman said. “Tonight is in her honor, she’s smiling down on us right now.”
Weed’s family was not present at the vigil but sent a letter which was read by Assistant Principal Helen Thomas. The family thanked everyone and said Nicole lived life to the fullest.
In her poem to Nicole, Harriman said people their hearts could be empty because they can’t see Nicole or be full with the love they shared with her.
“Do what she would want, smile, open your eyes and live on,” Harriman read.
